In
this fever-dream of a Western, Leo is a young, hotshot
gunslinger who, it turns out, is also the son of town
boss Gene Hackman, but it was co-star and producer
Sharon Stone who talked him into taking the role.
Stones character - a female version of Clint
Eastwoods "Man With No Name" - is
drawn to the corrupt town of Redemption (run by Hackman
as a homicidal dictatorship) for a quickdraw-competition.
If
Lewis Carroll ("Alice In Wonderland") had
written a Western, it might very well have been this
one. A deft - some might say daft - mixture
of genre-cliches and extreme closeups (of Stone, mostly)
the film was directed by shock-stylist Sam Raimi (who
would go on to make 1999s brilliant "A
Simple Plan"), and is filled with saturated color
and melodramatic intensity.
